Choosing the right tail lights

Many cars split each rear light into two pieces: an outer light fixed to the body and an inner light on the boot lid or tailgate. They are separate parts with separate listings, so check the photo against the piece that is broken. Sedan, hatch and wagon versions of the same model almost never share a tail light.

Later models often use LED tail lights where earlier builds use globes, and a facelift can change the lens pattern while keeping the same shape. Most tail lights are held by two to four nuts or bolts reached from inside the boot, and the plug transfers across. Listings sold without globes or a globe holder need your existing ones moved over.

Check these before you order

• Outer body-mounted light or inner boot lid or tailgate light
• Body style: sedan, hatch, wagon, ute or van
• Globe type or LED, matched against the photo
• Series and build month, including facelift changes
• Left or right hand side
